May 2020
Doctors are lifesavers, especially amidst a pandemic. At a time when doctors are putting their lives on the line to help the community, they are being denied basic human rights. Resident doctors in Delhi are paid INR 80,000 per month, Maharashtra pays INR 55,000 and Kerala pays it’s Resident doctors INR 50,000 while Resident doctors in Karnataka are paid a meagre INR 30,000 per month. These doctors have to shoulder fees up to INR 1,30,000 along with other living expenses like Hostel fees, Books, Monthly fees, transport etc.
The last stipend hike happened 5 years ago in 2015! Minister for Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar on 5th May 2020, directed the Medical Education Department to consider the request made by the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) to increase the stipend. But nothing has been heard so far.
Doctors have been fighting for 2 years. Although the last hike was 5 years ago, the course fees were increased five-fold sans any warning in 2019, putting tremendous financial pressure on them.
In this war against a raging pandemic, we won’t be able to win without our soldiers at front. Their needs are to be given utmost importance!
