Tomatino Plog for Clean Bengaluru

Community Collaboration in HSR Layout: A Step Towards a Cleaner and Greener Bengaluru

HSR Layout, Bengaluru: 30th July witnessed a remarkable event as various community organizations and concerned citizens came together in a collective effort to tackle waste management issues in HSR Layout. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), The Indian Ploggers Army, HSR Citizens Forum, and Jhatkaa.org created an event, aiming to create awareness about waste segregation and promote a cleaner environment.

BBMP's Challenges

BBMP Health Inspector, Satya, highlighted the progress made in waste processing, stating that an impressive 92% of waste has been successfully managed. However, challenges remain, particularly concerning the disposal of paper cups and gutka packets. Shopkeepers in the area have been reluctant to switch to more sustainable alternatives due to concerns about profitability.

Community action

The event saw an inspiring display of community action as 15 dedicated citizens participated in the “plogging” activity. Plogging, a combination of jogging and picking up litter, has gained popularity as a practical way to keep public spaces clean while promoting fitness and environmental consciousness. Today’s participants collected an impressive 40 kgs of waste during their plogging session, which started at Swachagraha Kalika Kendra and ended at the BDA complex.

The pivotal moment of the event occurred when BBMP officials engaged in constructive discussions with two shops inside the BDA complex – Nandini and Dosa Point – urging them to actively participate in waste segregation efforts. Encouragingly, these discussions laid the groundwork for potential waste management partnerships in the future.

Speaking about the event, Mehul a Citizen, said, “We are thrilled to see such active involvement from the community. It’s heartwarming to witness citizens taking the initiative to make their neighbourhood cleaner and greener. We hope that this event serves as a catalyst for more sustainable practices and greater cooperation.”

The Citizens also expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming response from residents. They emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and eco-friendly living environment.

Community, organisation and BBMP’s effort

Jhatkaa.org, a nonprofit organization focused on environmental advocacy, lauded the efforts of all participants and reiterated its commitment to supporting such initiatives in the future using technology.

As this event comes to a close, it marks the beginning of a new chapter in waste management efforts in HSR Layout. The collaboration between BBMP, The Indian Ploggers Army, HSR Citizens Forum, and Jhatkaa.org demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
