Temple Run for Clean Bengaluru

Citizens, NGOs, and BBMP Join Hands for a Clean Bengaluru: A Successful Cleanup Drive at Bull Temple, Basavangudi

Date: July 9, 2023

In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental consciousness, citizens, community groups, NGOs, and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) converged at Bull Temple, Basavangudi on July 9th, 2023. The collaborative effort aimed to enhance the cleanliness of Bengaluru and promote responsible waste management practices. Spearheaded by Raj, a passionate citizen from JP Nagar and the founder of The Indian Ploggers Army, the event witnessed a significant turnout of dedicated individuals who travelled from far-flung areas to contribute to the initiative.

Supported by 15 citizens, BBMP officials, the Indian Ploggers Army, and Jhatkaa.org, the cleanup activity proved to be a resounding success. Volunteers, guided by Raj and fellow organizers, diligently scoured the temple’s surroundings, collecting over 15 bags of dry waste. The collected waste was promptly handed over to the BBMP representatives, who had graciously extended their on-ground support to the initiative.

The efforts of the enthusiastic participants were documented on the Namma Clean Bengaluru website, where volunteers shared their experiences and showcased the impact they had made.

Harish and a team of five BBMP Marshals actively participated in the cleanup drive, emphasizing the importance of waste segregation. They urged citizens to categorize waste correctly and hand it over to designated BBMP vehicles, thereby ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable city.

Reflecting on the collaborative effort, Chiku Agarwal, Senior Engagement Associate at Jhatkaa.org, stated, “This initiative has helped citizens realize the amount of single-use waste they generate and how they can reduce consumption to alleviate the strain on our landfills. Furthermore, it has enabled the BBMP to acknowledge the enthusiastic volunteers who generously contribute their time to initiatives like this.”

“It’s always collaborative work that does wonders.
Bbmp working with citizens will make a huge difference for a bit more cleaner Bengaluru. Even citizens need to be equally responsible and segregate the waste at source, avoid single-use disposable’s wherever they go” as per Raj, The Indian Ploggers Army.

The BBMP expressed its immense satisfaction in supporting the cleanup drive and extended an open invitation for future initiatives that foster collaboration between citizens and the civic body. This joint effort holds the promise of making a substantial difference in creating a cleaner Bengaluru. Raj, the driving force behind The Indian Ploggers Army, emphasized the significance of citizen participation, urging individuals to take responsibility for waste segregation at the source and to minimize the use of single-use disposables in their daily lives.

The passionate volunteers expressed their eagerness to be continuously involved in such transformative endeavours and eagerly requested further opportunities to contribute to similar initiatives in their respective neighbourhoods.

The successful cleanup drive at Bull Temple stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and collective action in preserving the environment. With citizens, NGOs, and the BBMP working hand in hand, Bengaluru can aspire to be a shining example of cleanliness and sustainability.
