Citizen Action Around Waste Management

Introduction:

In a promising display of community engagement and environmental consciousness, citizens of Bangalore have taken the initiative to create clean spaces across the city. With the launch of the Clean Bengaluru tool just 1.5 months, citizens have already organized five successful engagements, resulting in the collection of more than 1000 kgs of waste. These efforts, conducted in collaboration with community groups like The Indian Ploggers Army, Cognition Bangalore, and various colleges, have not only cleaned up the areas but also inspired and encouraged more citizens to join the cause.

  1. Basavangudi:

In the heart of Bangalore, citizens came together in Basavangudi to tackle the issue of waste accumulation. Armed with gloves, bags, and unwavering determination, the group embarked on a cleaning drive that successfully removed 15 bagsof waste from the area. This engagement served as a catalyst, igniting the spirit of environmental responsibility among the local residents.

  1. Sarjapura:

The citizens of Sarjapura, a rapidly developing locality, recognized the need for maintaining cleanliness as the area undergoes urbanization. A citizen Harshitha and her 5 friends visited the Kaikondrahalli Lake to raise awareness around waste management and segregation in their locality. Together, they managed to educate more citizens around the waste management. They also hosted a workshop with their college students to take it forward.

  1. Rajijinagar:

Citizens in Rajijinagar took matters into their own hands to make their neighborhood a cleaner and healthier place to live. Through coordinated efforts with Cognition Bangalore, the community engaged in a rigorous clean-up campaign. Their hard work and dedication resulted in the removal of substantial waste, leaving behind a renewed sense of pride and commitment to maintaining cleanliness in the area.

  1. Shalini Grounds:

The citizens of Bangalore recognized the importance of preserving public recreational spaces and joined forces to clean up Shalini Grounds. Partnering with local colleges, the community organized a clean-up initiative that attracted students and residents alike. Their collective efforts not only beautified Shalini Grounds but also served as a powerful example of the positive impact citizen-led movements can have on urban environments.

  1. Lalbagh:

Lalbagh, a cherished botanical garden in Bangalore, also witnessed the active participation of citizens in cleaning and preserving its natural beauty. Collaborating with The Indian Ploggers Army and other community groups, passionate individuals dedicated their time and energy to remove waste from Lalbagh. This engagement demonstrated the citizens’ commitment to safeguarding and maintaining Bangalore’s iconic landmarks.

  1. Chandra Layout:

An initiative during the Republic Day 2023 which brought together a pool of citizens from the chandra layout to rase awareness and mark the garbage spots on the tool. The event was led by Dharshana and Archana from their society.

As the launch of the Clean Bengaluru tool draws closer, citizens in Bangalore have already set a remarkable precedent by taking the lead in creating clean spaces across the city. These five engagements, conducted with the support of community groups like The Indian Ploggers Army, Cognition Bangalore, and colleges, have yielded impressive results, with over 5 tonnes of waste collected so far.
